The RYVES ( Rives, Reeves, and other phonetic variations-see note 1) coat of arms displayed above is mounted on the Almshouse at Blandford Forum, England. It is believed to be the Coat of Arms of the branch of the Ryves (Rives, Reeves) family which is traceable back to Robert Ryves of Blandford in Dorsetshire, England. He was born c 1490.

I am indebted to Bob Reeves, a cousin who I met via the Internet, for furnishing the photo of the Ryves Coat of Arms to me and suggesting I use it to preface my Reeves Home Page. I am doubly indebted to him for helping me to fill in vital missing links in my family line which enabled me to trace it back to England.

(Note 1: Some known variations of the name Reeves are as follows: Reves, Reaves, Rives, Ryves, Rieves, Revis, Reve, Reeve, and possibly other variations. If a name, when sounded out, pronounces close to "Reeves," it is probably a variation. It is not known which is the original spelling, though some researchers opine it is Rives, which is believed to be the spelling used in France and brought to England by Heugenot emigrants and subsequently anglicized to the spelling of Ryves.

My home page is designed to help me connect with others who are interested in tracing the REEVES surname. The future construction of this page will include a summary of the genealogical data that I have gathered on my Reeves ancestors, as well as links to other sites which will contain additional information. I invite anyone who is interested in this surname to drop me a line via e-mail to Reeves1@bellsouth.net

A brief description of this site may be helpful to the reader in exploring it. The page is arranged as follows:

- A chronological family history of my personal REEVES lineage from the present back to 1490's England.

- Throughout the chronology, links will be found to web pages covering some individuals in my line. These are the ancestors about whom I have been able to accumulate biographical data, and the most important or interesting parts of this data are included on the linked page.

- At the end of the chronology is a list of "favorite places," which are links to genealogy sites which I have found useful to my research.

- After the listing of favorite genealogy sites below, I list links to several sites of special interest, such as another page I host listing various REEVES genealogy home pages which I have found while exploring the web. You can link directly from my REEVES HOME PAGES site to many of these pages, or you can conduct your own search for Reeves Home Pages. For those who find a connection to one of their ancestors on my site, and wish to explore this connection in greater detail, I invite you to visit my Family Tree Maker Home Page, where I have posted more of my genealogical work, in the form of a book entitled "Ancestors and Descendants of James Milton Reeves of Crawford County, Georgia." Simply click the following link: FTM Paul Reeves Home Page

Also, for more complete detail of my family history, visit www.rootsweb.com, select the "World Connect Project," and search for the distinctive name "Gault Gurley Reeves." From the few sites listed, select the one submitted by "PaulReeves94." This one will be mine. Gault Gurley is my grandfather, and you can go up or down in my family file according to your interests. I can't give a direct link here, as rootsweb.com frequently changes their link designations. Good hunting!

Before accessing the FTM or Rootsweb sites, however, I recommend you scroll through the following to see if your lineage intersects with mine at some point:

NOTE: The following genealogy is presented in ascendant form,    which can be followed simply by scrolling down the page. I.e., it starts with the present and goes back into time to my earliest known ancestor, Robert Ryves,  b 1490. If you are more comfortable with the traditional descendant form of following an ancestral line, you can simply click on "ROBERT RYVES" and you will be taken to the beginning of my line and can scroll upwards on the page to the present.

A thumbnail sketch of my genealogy to date, starting with the present generation, and proceeding back into time to 1490. The male head of each family grouping is shown in bold capital red letters:

After he retired from the REA, he spent his time fishing and gardening. He died in an automobile accident in 1962 near Eastman, Ga. Biographical: Little is known about G. G. He farmed and started his family near Roberta, Ga, where he was born and raised. They later moved to Ben Hill County, Ga. in the early 1900's, where he raised his children to adulthood. He and his wife went to live with his son Rodolphus (Doc) Reeves and wife Edith in his later years, and both died of natural causes while living with them. They are buried near Fitzgerald, Ga. The spelling of his given names are in doubt, as it appears in the family bible only as "G. G. Reeves," and various compiled works and family histories spell his first name in different ways, such as "Gault," "Gaught," etc. In any case, the name is a distinctive one, and I have been told he was named for a Confederate General. If any visitor is able to validate that, I would like to hear from them, as I have been unable to find one with that name in the records. Census records show his name as "Gurley G. Reeves," or simply "G.G. Reeves."

WILLIAM REEVES

IMPORTANT NOTE:

William's burial place is unknown. He died in Fayette County in Dec. 1850, and most certainly is buried somewhere in that county. Since he was a prominent and prosperous citizen, it is probable that his burial site is marked with an engraved tombstone. However, extensive searching of records and cemeteries in Fayette County have not revealed the whereabouts of his grave. His descendants are eager to find his resting place. If anyone reading this knows of the whereabouts of William Reeves' grave, please write to Paul Reeves, address: reeves1@bellsouth.net. Thank you!

Biographical: No details are available at this time. Anyone having information about Wiley Reeves is asked to please contact me at reeves1@bellsouth.net. I do have proof that Wiley Reeves was the father of William Reeves #5 above. This proof is in the form of a transcript from what appears to be the Wiley Reeves family bible, as it names all of Wiley Reeves' children, including William Reeves #5 above, with his exact date of birth. Wiley's issue:

i. Wyatt Reeves 1789-1826 = Elizabeth Sturgis

xii.Polly A. Reeves 1805-?

xiii. Elizabeth T. Reeves 1805-?

NOTE: Mariah and Tabitha Reeves above are not listed in the Wiley Reeves bible transcription. It is thus possible that there is a duplication of two of the names due to a previous researcher using different names from those which are recorded in the bible. An effort will be made to resolve this discrepancy.

NOTE: THE INFORMATION FROM THIS POINT HAS BEEN EXTRACTED FROM A WORK ENTITLED "REEVES REVIEW II," A WELL-KNOWN WORK DEALING WITH THE HISTORY OF THE REEVES FAMILY. WHILE THIS WORK HAS MUCH VALUABLE INFORMATION IN IT, AND IS THE RESULT OF CONSIDERABLE EFFORT BY ITS AUTHORS, ITS CONTENT IS ONLY AS ACCURATE AS THE INFORMATION THE AUTHORS HAD ACCESS TO, WHICH IN SOME CASES WAS NOT CORRECT. FOR EXAMPLE, IT HAD AN ERRONEOUS LINKAGE IN MY LINE THAT CAUSED ME TO SPEND 6 MONTHS OF RESEARCH ON THE WRONG ANCESTORS. AS IS THE CASE WITH ANY COMPILED WORK (AS OPPOSED TO A DOCUMENTED WORK), I SUGGEST THAT IT BE USED AS A STARTING PLACE, AND THE THE LINKAGES SHOWN  IN IT BE USED WITH CAUTION, AND VERIFIED IF IMPORTANT USE IS TO BE MADE OF THEM.

NOTE:
The above is incomplete, and I will fill in more details later. Information on some of my known family line is from a work by Emma Barrett Reeves, author of "Reeves Review, Book II, Memorial Volume, 1996". A secondary reference source of great value is "Reliques of the Rives," by James Rives Childs, 1929. I have also extracted information from a work by Arthur Ray Rowland entitled "Wiley Reeves, His Descendants and Ancestors." Most of these books can be found in most large genealogical libraries, such as the National Archives and Family History Centers. "Reliques of the Rives" can be obtained in paperback form from Heritage Books, Inc. in Bowie, MD, and Reeves Review II may be available from Ericson Books in Nacogdoches, Texas, though the supply of new books may be exhausted. The work by Arthur Ray Rowland can be obtained from its author at RRow999@aol.com.
I also acknowledge and thank Elsie Peugh of Thomaston, Ga., and numerous others who have contributed bits and pieces to my knowlege of my family history.

Thanks for visiting the beginnings of my home page. I would be glad to hear from you anytime, and would appreciate any additions or corrections to the data I've presented. Although much of it has been verified, some of it is secondary data and may be partially in error.
