Like it's rival, the Mustang, the 1967 Camaro was chosen to
pace the Indianapolis 500 in its introductory year.
Only two years into production, in 1969, the Camaro was honored for the second
time with pace car duties at the greatest spectacle in racing, the Indy 500.
In 1982, the Camaro was again chosen to lead the field at the start of the
Indianapolis 500. The actual pacer did require a worked-over aluminum-block
5.0-liter V8 to get the car up to speed and on par with the cars trailing behind
it.
The most recent Camaro designated as a pace car at the famed Brickyard was the 1993 model. Aside from safety and communications additions, not much was done to it, proving that performance had finally returned to a satisfactory level.
