Notes on sending LARGE files by e-mail

I wanted to distribute a large file to our club officers, and I quickly ran into problems, as the original (.iso) file was 591 MB. The following notes reflect my experience in attempting to use several online services that are supposed to help you overcome the obstacles that you typically face when attempting to send large files.

YouSendIt.com and Dropload.com each have a 100 MB limit for their free accounts, so their limits were too small for this task.

My BellSouth webpage has only a 10 MB limit, so I certainly could not post it there!

SendThisFile.com was the only free service I initially found that claims "We do not limit file size", but the reality is that uploading of very large files is throttled, and was extremely slow for this file, and eventually quit entirely on two separate attempts to upload.

Next, I Googled for help (Google search for send large files email free) and found a pretty good review of these large file services at MasterNewMedia.org News.

After reading the article, I tried uploading with TransferBigFiles.com, but it only partially completed before crashing.

Then I decided to make the file smaller before retrying, so I compressed the .iso as a .rar file and tried another service - Zupload.com, which also crashed part of the way through upload.

Next I looked at: http://www.senduit.com/, http://www.use80.com/, and http://www.velodoc.com/, but each have a 100 MB limit.

Finally, I tried http://www.fileflyer.com/, which allows up to 400 MB. Although the original iso file was too big, the compressed rar, at 338 MB should work. Indeed, it seemed to upload fine, and in testing, I was able to then successfully download the file. I have had reports, however, from 2 individuals that thet were not able to download this successfully.

Summary and Conclusion: Although I have successfully used (and liked) YouSendIt in the past, it was not used to send such a large file. In my attempts to send this large file, the only service I found that actually seemed to work fairly well was FileFlyer, and any problems noted above may have (hopefully) improved since this test.

If anyone has had success sending a file over 100 MB, please share your experience with me and/or the club. Thanks
