John Alexander Erwin

This page is very much a work in progress.  I hope that I can provide information to other researchers on the families listed below but I also hope to stimulate discussion among researchers of the same family lines.  Where there are mistakes, I wish to be informed about them.  I have tried to be careful about such things and mark every questionable line with a ? but of course I am not perfect.  In my database I include unproven and speculative connections as working propositions, but I have tried to remove them from this report.  Find out the principal SURNAMES contained here. Clicking on the number of any person will connect to that person's father (in progress.) I also try to provide links to other information and notes about a person where possible.  I am very grateful to the "Cousins" who have allowed that privilege.  Anyway, I hope this works for you and I will welcome any comments to Bob Erwin.

John Paxton Erwin

A Tribute of Esteem in the Passing of Rev. John Paxton Erwin

On February 4th this Class, the Church and the Community lost an earnest and zealous Member.

He was seventy-four (74) years of age and had been a member of the North Georgia Conference for Fifty-one years; He had served some of its best charges, three of these years 1921-1922 and 1923, he was a pastor of this Church and later was Presiding Elder of the Rome District.

As a minister his zeal knew no limits. His health gave way and he was forced to retire in 1937. He with his family, came to Carrollton and made their home in a superannuate home furnished by this Church.

To his beloved wife, who has shared his labors and borne his sorrows, and their children, we extend sincere sympathy, commending them to the loving kindness and tender mercies of the God whom he had long served, with the assurance that His love will ever abide with them.

Signed - E. T. Jackson - J. J Thomason

Rev. John Paxton Erwin

Rev. John Paxton Erwin was born May 10, 1870 in Union County, Georgia . . .

He was coverted at the age of 13 under the preaching of Bro. Hendrick . . . He was licensed to preach in 1892 and preached his first sermon in his home church, Zion, where he had been converted. He was admitted on trial at the North Georgia Annual Conference meeting in Rome in 1894.

November 6, 1900 he was married to Miss Leila Parks of Auburn, Georgia, the service being read by Rev. M. L. Underwood at her home. . .

Wesleyan Christian Advocate

Blue Ridge, Georgia was the seat of the Conference for the Marietta District. I was interested in being there and seeing how the new elder, Rev. J. P. Erwin, drove the team through these mountain roads, and am delighted to report that everything went through without a hitch or a bobble. A veteran could have done no better.

Rev. J. P. Erwin, the worthy divine, who has served the Methodist church here for the past three years, was married Tuesday to Miss Leila Parks, at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Parks, near Auburn. The bride is a neice of Prof. Bradley of Emory College, and is a lady of the highest culture and refinement, and by her kind disposition and her many noble traits of character, she has won the love and admiration of all who knew her, and is one of the most popular young ladies of her community. She is an honor graduate of LaGrange Female College. Rev. Mr. Erwin, the bridegrooom, is a gentleman of the truest type, and justly deserves the reverence and distinction of his divine calling. During his pastoral charge here he has won for himself many lasting friends, who unite in congratulating him, and wishing the happy couple a long life of unalloyed happiness.

Washington (GA) Gazette - Nov. 17, 1893

Surgeon H. S. Bradley

A Just Tribute to This Gallant Member of Cobb's Legion

The many of our readers who belonged to the famous Cobb's Legion will read with mingled sadness and pleasure the following high tribute paid Surgeon Henry S. Bradley, recently deceased, by his comrade, F. E. Eve, of Augusta:

To the Survivors of the "Cobb Legion" Georgia Calvary: The sad intellegence of the death of our beloved surgeon, Dr. Henry S. Bradley, at the time pastor of the Methodist church in Washington, Ga., was imparted to me on my return to the state by a letter from one of our old regiment, H. A. Roebuck, of whom, like many others of that glorious old band, I had lost sight. Of whom Gen. Hampton, he, standing as he does without a peer now living in public or private life, whose escutcheon has no stain upon it, one to whom we can proudly refer as a type of the true Southern gentleman of ante-bellum times. "Our Confederate Brigadier;" who, when repudiated by his own state despite the historical services he had rendered it, and that in so conspicuous a manner that President appointed him to a most responsible position under the general government, he, Wade Hampton, said: That the Cobb Legion was the best regiment in either army, North or South.

Paste that, you survivors of "The Cobbs," as Gen. Stuart called us, in your family Bible, so that your children's children can refer to it as their proudest heritage. When the true history of our Confederate war is written, and of this regiment, either as assistant surgeon, or brigadier surgeon, was Henry S. Bradley from 1861 to 1865, beloved, respected and honored by officers and men, general officers and private soldiers. Born in 1837, educated under adverse circumstances, married to a most exemplary woman in early life. While we rejoice that he drew a prize in the lottery of matrimonial and domestic life, 'tis as the soldier, the army surgeon in war times that we knew him. Although belonging to that class of fighters known as "the bomb proof" by the "old Vets," yet how often have we seen "old Brad," as we loved to call him, with his long hair floating to the breeze on his "old brown" galloping up among the skirmishers to look after some seriously wounded man, and how we used to yell at him out of pure fun. Well do I recall when the Cobb Legion was picketing below Malvern Hill in 1862. In a skirmish at Foxhall's on of our men came in wounded, and as "Old Brad" was probing for the ball he had me to hold Rhode's arm, I being a private at the time in the Richmond Hussars. It was in July, and my sleeves were rolled up, when he grabbed my arm exclaiming, "Major, what a beautiful subject for amputation!" much to my horrow, and the amusement of Maj. Delaney, Will Church and Frank Jones, his chums from the Athens, Ga., Troopers, and his merry laugh at my expense. Always the first with us in frolic, and with us in nearly every engagement, he could have, as I begged him to, and he promised me, wrtten the best history of our regiment, and I believe of the calvary of the army of Northern Virginia. Voluntarily was he captured and carried to the old Capital prison, Washington D. C., with his most intiamte friend, Col. Delany, submitting to the dangers from bullets and ill treatment from the Federals to be with and administer to the wants of his helpless friend and comander, our Chevalier Bayard, the peerless Delaney, when he received his mortal wound.

Soon in the morning of the battle of Brandy Station, where the "Cobb Legion" gained immortality by their most desperate charge, Stuart, Hampton and Young were there to witness it. Hurling back four regiments and a squadron of federal calvary with 127 sabres, losing 54 in that number, but breaking the triumphant advance of Pleasonton after he had captured Stuart's headquarters which we drove them from with the sabre. Early on that morning as we were forming line of battle to charge the Yankee infantry, who were crowding Capt. Jerry Rich and his dismounted skirmishers - many of whom were killed, wounded, or acptured - as my squadron wheeled into line on the left of the regiment, a wave of the hand from "Old Brad" carried me to his side, and from a concealed flask in his hand conveyed in the same suueptitious manner in my hat - to my mouth - was my breakfast and dinner, meat and drink obtained, in the mouthful of brandy he told to take on that memorable day, never shall I forget that or him.

January and February 64, around "Bedricksburg" as he playfully called Fredricksburg. How his gay life, jolly song or the tunes of his violin soothed the evil sprit of discontent, "even as the harp of David did Saul" and the gloomy hours of confinement to camp, from rain, snow or duty, to pass oblivious of all deprivations or hardships. A jest at our "hard tack and mule beef" would make us content with our rations, for he knew "it was all our poor country could do," and join with him in joking the cronic grumblers - vowing he would clean out a "Yankee ironclad gunboat" with his pills, to swallow it down and not be scared, as he walked off singing "Sweet Evilina" to visit some poor sick or wounded patient.

Another gone to join the Silent Brigade of Hampton's Calvary, whose ranks we are almost daily recruiting from our depleted batallions. Soon there will be but a corporal's guard to fire the last salute over their dead comrades grave or even one to pay this slight tribute to their memory. No more old friend will your rollicking laugh, joyous voice or sweet-toned violin be heard around headquarters as we would sing at the infantry as they marched by, "If You Want to Have a Good Time Jine the Calvary." JebStuart's battle song. We wil never look upon your like again. May the blessings of that merciful God, to whose service your latter days were dedicated, rest with you and yours through eternity.

Let our children learn this story from the page of Southern pen; let them know their father's glory, dying for the rights of men; let them ever feel with honor when they hear those "Rebels" names of Lee and all our peerless heroes, they can never be ashamed.

Though he died not from bullet wound, yet did the sufferings and exposures of four years of service with the army of Northern Virginia entitle him to be enrolled amongst our immortals, and with the proud epitath, that does not lie in his case:

Here lies a Confederate Soldier who did his duty as all his regiment can certify.

"REQUIESCAT IN PACE"

Goodman Hughes

My great-great-great granndfather was Rev. Thomas M. Hughes (1/31/1809-8/22/1882), brother to John Wilson Hughes and Rev. Goodman Hughes (6/10/1811-6/23/1899) of Dahlonega .  They were all born in Buncombe County, NC. Their father was also named Goodman Hughes, who died there in 1815. I believe he came there from Fairfield County, SC about 1800 (census). Their mother was Eleanor Jones (or Payne, I have two differing sources. Payne is the name given in her Obit.) She was born 5/3/1785 and died 9/2/1880 in Dahlonega and is buried there. After Goodman Hughes died, she married Whitfield W. Bond and on of their sons was Rev. W. M. D. Bond, who is buried in College Park. She had over 500 lineal descendents at the time of her death. John W. Hughes went to California for the gold rush, came back and I believe was the County Recorder for Dawson County. He remarried to Emily Willis in 1882. Thomas M. Hughes spent a couple of terms in the state house after the Civil War and lived in Blairsville after having lived close to Helen until about 1835. His daughter Rosetta married James Calvin Erwin in 1861 and they lived near Young Harris.

HUGHES - Rev. Thomas M. Hughes, of Blairsville, Ga., was born January 31, 1809, and died August 22,1882, in the seventy-fourth year of his age.

He was licensed to preach the Gospel in 1839. Ordained deacon by Bishop Andrew in 1847, and ordained an elder by Bishop Pierce in 1867. In his death it may be truly said a great man in Israel has fallen, a strong pillar in the Methodist Church is removed. He never joined the itinerant ranks but was a local preacher - in labors abundant, regular and prompt in his appointments, efficient and impressive in his preaching. He was distinguished as a sweet singer. In a ministry of more than forty years, among the same people, he maintained an unwaining popularity, never became stale. He enjoyed a stability of character and uniformity of deportment attained by few, comparatively, in this eventful life. In his domestic relations he was the patriarch of a large family of sons, daughters and grandchildren, several of whom are ministers of the Gospel, one in the North Georgia Conference. As a citizen, he was patriotic; strong in his convictions, and watchful of the interests of the country. During his life he held several positions of honor and trust by the suffrage of his people, among them the office of Clerk of the Superior Court of Union County, Georgia, which he filled for sixteen consecutive years. Also he served two terms in the Legislature of Georgia. But he finished up the work of a useful life, and peacefully passed away to his final reward in heaven, leaving behind him the stimulus of a good example and a good name, which is to be chosen rather than great riches.

It would be unjust to write these lines and not mention the name of Uncle "Tommie" Hughes. An uneducated local preacher as far as text books were concerned, but he had an education which he received from the Holy Ghost, who abode in his Christian heart. He can with truth be called a benefactor of this part of Georgia. Those who knew him loved him. While his sermons and songs vibrate no longer among these mountains, he is praising God above, and has left behind him sons and grandsons, who thank God, are following in his footprints. Rev. F. G. Hughes, of the North Georgia Conference, and Rev. T. C. Hughes, a local preacher of great power, are his sons. Rev. W. T. Hamby and J. P. Erwin, of the North Georgia Conference, are his grandsons.

Francis Bird

A very appropriate report was read to the Georgia Conference by the Committee on Memoirs, in which Bro. Bird's name was included. If this report or any other announcement of his death has appeared in any of the Church papers, it has escaped my notice. I am not willing that our fathers in the ministry should pass away from us thus unnoticed, though the sphere in which they moved, be ever so humble. To be a minister of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ for nearly sixty years, is no small honor. I am not furnished with dates and incidents, to prepare an obituary notice, nor would it be proper for me to do so, as some one else may have done it, or may yet do so.   Bro. Bird, was a native of North Carolina, embraced religion when a child, and entered the ministry when quite a young man - I think before he was twenty. He was admitted on trial in the South Carolina Conference in 1805, with James Russell, Reddick Pierce, and Lovick Pierce. There were eleven members of the class, four of whom have preached more than fifty years. Amos Curtis died I believe a few years since. After entering the Conference, Bro. B. received the following appointments: 1805, Orangeburg and Edisto; 1806, Montgomery; 1807, Catawba; 1808, Buncombe.   Changes of climate and hard work had injured his constitution.  About this time he was married and obtained a location. The times required married men to locate, but he was an itinerant in spirit all the time. From North Carolina he moved to Habersham co. Ga., where he lived several years. That colony from the old North State, was a good contribution to those new settlements of upper Georgia. In it were the Richardsons, Williams, the Littlejohns, the Birds, and others who have been useful in life and whose names are written in heaven. Bro. B., was a pioneer man, and when what is now known as Cherokee, Georgia, was settled by the whites, he was one of the first to penetrate the wilderness. It was there, on the west side of the Chickamauga, that I first became acquainted with him, and his worthy family.   At their humble home the servant of the Lord always met a cordial Christian welcome, whether he be a junior or senior Preacher, Presiding Elder or Bishop, it mattered not; nor was the welcome confined to ministers of their own denomination. the quarterly fasts were observed and the quarterly meetings attended as well as the stated appointments of their Church, in the immediate vicinity where they lived. His children were all daughters, nine in number; all worthy members of the Church. One of them a gentle, lovely woman, found a home and a grave in Missouri; another a superior woman found her home and her grave too, for aught I know, in Arkansas. And before leaving the family I will say, that I have never known a minister's family in which his office, as a minister, was more strictly respected than was Bro. Bird's by his excellent wife and daughters. There was no repulsive austerity about him; for he as as simple as a child. The explanation is, his wife respected it and her children knew nothing else. Bro. B., like thousands of good men, had many a sore difficulty to pass through. The energies of his youthful mind were given to the Church, so he was not well trained to business. He had what was called a good start, but did not keep it. These things sometimes hindered his ministry and greatly oppressed his feelings. sometimes in these "fiery trials," the weaknesses of human nature were exhibited, but to the eye of charity, there was ever exhibited the great purpose of his life, which was to serve God and to escape safely from this world of trouble to one of peace and joy.   In January 1849 he was readmitted into the Georgia Conference, of which he remained a member until his death, which occurred in November last, just before the session of the Conference. His name was on the superannuated list most of the time after his re- admission, though as a supply he had travelled several years, before he re-entered the Conference. He was a child of the mountains. In Union, Gilmer, Fannin, and other counties in that region of Georgia, and over in North Carolina, he labored much. He knew nearly every Methodist family in the country. He was a fine rider and fond of the saddle. Brace him with a good strong cup of coffee and mount him on a good horse, and he was ready to face wind and snow, and to climb the ruggedest mountain in the land.   His mode of preaching was somewhat peculiar - as was his praying; but his ministry was extensively useful. He was fond of the Old Testement as well as the New - many of his texts were taken from the former. Much of his preaching was argumentative - his facts and conclusions were gathered directly in his own peculiar manner from the Bible. I have said, that his ministry was useful. When deeply concerned upon the subject of religion and anxious to know what to do, I received especial benefit from hearing him preach on the text, "come thou and go with us." After I made a profession of religion, his counsels were valuable to me. But I will add no more; only that he died in peace at his home in Catoosa county. Farewell, my aged friend; Thou hast gone to join my old class leader and many other sainted ones who kindly assisted me when I was starting for the heavenly road.

(William Jasper Cotter 11/16/1823 - 1/4/1922 was a prolific chronicler of North Georgia Methodism. It is through his writings that I have learned much of what I know of Francis and Thomas Bird. He is buried in Newnan, Ga., some few yards from the Rev. Francis Goodman Hughes, a grandson of Francis Bird.)

GEORGIA COMFERENCE JOURNAL M. E. CHURCH 1861

Francis Bird was born in 1785, and died Nov. 17, 1861. He entered the South Carolina Conference in 1804, located in 1808, and was readmitted in 1849. After travelling one or two years, he was put on the superannuated list. He was a deeply devoted Christian, and a faithful,  useful preacher. He died in the assured hope of a resurrection to eternal life.

Wesleyan Christian Advcate - September 19, 1883 Autobiography - XXXIV

There were five deaths reported at this session: Francis Bird, an old soldier of the cross. He was born in 1785 and died in November, 1861. He traveled only a few years as an effective preacher, when he was put on the superannuated list. He was a devotedly pious christian and a useful preacher. How well I remember a sermon he preached for me at Field's Chapel, in Cherokee County, from the text: "The Lord gave the word, and great was the company of them that publish it." Another was on "Great is the mystery of Godliness." He loved to preach, and his sermons were interesting to me always.

My Autobiography: W. J. Cotter - MESC Publishing

House.Nashville 1917

Here let me pay tribute to the Rev. Francis Bird. He entered the South Carolina Conference in 1805 with Dr. Lovick Pierce. He was an itinerant for four years, then married and located in Buncombe County, North Carolina. As there were no homes for pastors families, the marriage of a preacher was soon followed by his location. Yet these men did not cease to preach and build up the Church. They were loyal to all her interests. While in the Conference they were studious, became able men in the ministry, and supplied a great need in the Church. As young itinerants were not ordained, these local preachers baptized and administered the sacrament to the people. Brother Bird did a full share of this good work in keeping together and building up the Church. While yet a strong man he moved to Habersham County and lived in the Mossy Creek settlement, which was inhabited by people of high intelligence.  Dr. Josiah Askew, grandfather of Bishop Atticus G. Haygood and of Miss Laura Haygood, is buried there. The Bishop's mother taught him all the Latin he ever learned. Historians have not done full justice to these people. Nacoochee started first and has always been in the lead.  Brother Bird moved to Cherokee, Georgia, before the Indians left, and as the white people came he was ready to organize them into a Church. One of the first churches in Walker County was a Bird's Chapel.   Brother Bird was often a supply on a mission. He was agreat preacher, and people heard him gladly. He lived in his own home, had plenty, and was given to hospitality. Travelling by private conveyance to a Western Conference, Bishop Andrew stopped with his old friend and mentioned his enjoyment of the visit. Sister Bird read good books, had anamiable disposition, and her home influence was the best. the nine daughters of the family were modeled after their mother - all fair in feature, graceful in form, bright in mind, and married not too young nor too old. The parents were sweethearts as long as the lived. Brother Bird died in November, 1861; his wife died in May, 1864. Both were buried in Lee's Chapel, in graves still unmarked, not far from Catoosa Springs. The late Rev F. G. Hughes was Brother Bird's grandson, and he has four great-grandsons in the North Georgia Conference: the Revs. W. T. Hamby, John P. Irvine (Erwin), and the Twiggs brothers. Personally, I owe much to Brother Bird, who baptized me and other members of the family.

History in Catoosa County: William Henry Harrison Clark

Page 66: Rev. Francis Bird, once a very eminent Methodist preacher and a very old man, lived with his son, Frank Bird. Frank, who was also a minister, lived in the neighborhood of Catoosa Springs for many years. In 1848, the elder Bird was at a camp meeting at Blue Springs near Red Clay. It was on a Sunday night, after the regular sermon, when he took the stand. His head was as white as cotton and his face bleached with age. He had on a white linen suit, white hose and low slippers. He had on a gown, buttoned up in front over his suit, which he opened and threw back on his shoulders. He looked very much like a spirit from some other world. His trembling voice and eloquent words fired the whole congregation and excitement lasted several hours. We never saw him again. He had been a great preacher.

(This account, from the late Nineteenth Century, is probably mistaken. The man described is more likely Thomas Bird, who died in 1852.)

Miscellanies: - Rev. J. O. Andrew (Louisville, 1854)

On Monday morning our good friend, Judge Hammond, who lives in the neighborhood, kindly took me in his carriage to old brother Francis Bird, one of our old-time worthies. He was once a travelling preacher, but he has been local for many years; he is now, by employment from the presiding elder, supplying the Dade mission. They have no servants, and the old man told me that himself and his wife had brought up nine daughters by the labor of their own hands; "and," said he, "the best of all is, that they are every one members of the church." I preached that night in his cabin to a crowd of his neighbors, to the most of whom a bishop was a strange sight. We had a comfortable meeting, and spent our time very pleasantly with this plain and pious family. The next morning brother Lee kindly conveyed me in his carriage to Ringgold . . .

Reminscences of Early Methodism in South Carolina Conference

Rev. Nicholas Talley - Southern Christian Advocate 3/3/1859

Late in the fall we had a camp-meeting on the French Broad which was attended by Bishop Asbury. The weather was extremely unfavorable: storms of wind, rain and snow, in turn visited us, and the Bishop, as well as the rest of us, felt depressed. But as there was no help for it, the nearest house being several miles distant, we set about making the best of our situation and providing for the comfort of the Bishop, who could but illy stand withstand exposure to such severe weather. Gathering some large flat rocks, we constructed a rude sort of fire place and soon kindled a cheerful fire, which had the effect of reviving the sinking spirits of the old gentleman. Calling to Bro. John Bond, his travelling companion, to bring his travelling bag, he spread out his luncheon and invited us to join him, saying "come now, my children, and eat with your old father." Encouraged by his happy manner we soon forgot our trials, and no longer desponding on his account, we entered upon the duties of the meeting with renewed veal and diligence.

Shortly after, by the instructions of the Bishop, I left mt circuit in charge of Bro. Thos. Bird, an efficient local preacher, and set out to meet Bishop McKendree, to escort him to our approaching annual conference

Bishop Francis Asbury's Journal

Saturday, April 9, 1796 - We came to Cane Creek, in Burke County. We dined on some peach-pie in the woods. In the afternoon there arose a most dreadful storm of rain, with thunder and lightning: it was very awful; we cried to God for man and beast, and were preserved. We came in about seven o'clock, and were received by T. B. with great kindness. (could be Thomas Bird. The family lived in the Cane Creek area at this time. I don't know of another "T. B." there.)

Died in Walker Co. Ga., March 29, the Rev. Thomas Bird. He was born in Maryland April 18, 1762, moved to Virginia, and from thence to North Carolina, where he embraced religion under the preaching of the Rev. T. Williamson. He was licensed to exhort in 1793, and to preach in 1794, and received Elder's

orders in 1814, from the venerable Asbury. He served in the Revolutionary War for two years and four months under Col. Cleveland. The Christian and patriot is no more and as he went down into the dark vale, the star of Bethlehem cheered

him with it's heavenly light, while the rod and staff of Israel's shepherd were his comfort. In him were combined many of the virtues which beautify and ennoble the character of man. His heart was full of benevolence and it was happiness to labor in his Master's vineyard. He was a man of genuine piety,

amiable temper, good sense, irreproachable life, an agreeable colleague, and an acceptable preacher.

Few man have lived of whom it can be said, "They who knew him best loved him most."

Williamson Whitfield Parks

Williamson Whitfield Parks was born near Auburn, Ga, Gwinnett County on April 8, 1859 and lived in that community all of his life except for a few years in Flowery Branch, Ga. with his father Williamson Williams Parks. He married Miss Frances Bertie Bradley on Dec. 30, 1880. He was a miller by trade, operating a Park's Mill on Rocky Creek.

He was slender, medium height, dark hair with deep set blue eyes that were seldom without a twinkle. He stuttered on all the vowels in the alphabet but did not let this keep him from eager conversation and story telling with family and friends.

He was a staunch Methodist, was a steward and recording secretary for over sixty years.

He did not have the opportunity of attending school very much yet was an exceptionally well read man.

One of the happiest memories I have of home is of the family sitting around the wood fire on Winter nights while he read aloud from some good book. He was able to help us with our school work on up to college days.

Late one night my husband, our daughter and I were returning to Atlanta from Auburn. We were on a detour with which we were not familiar and our car got hopelessly stuck in the mud. We decided that we would have to wake the people in the nearest house and ask them to help us. When the man came to his door he asked what we wanted and who we were. When told that I was Mr. Whit Parks daughter he gladly dressed, got out his truck and pulled our car out of the mud. Many times during the years the words "you are the daughter of Mr. W. W. Parks" have been magic for me. I am grateful for the strict integrity and love that he transmitted to each of us.

Iwant to know how many children my daughter Nancy has as I have never heard to any certainty I must say it is a dull dead time about religion here - but we trust we are on the rock of ages - and feel like when we drop this mortal clay we shale land in glory where we shale ever be at rest with the Just made perfect by the blood of Christ Jesus - and trust to ? you when pain and trouble will cease to be - I am glad to hear that you have embarked in the gospel and you will go on and fight the good fight and win the prize at last - my companion and myself have lived very happy together ever since we were married and he joins me in love to you and says if our situation would admit of it he would join me in going to see you all - but we are both very old and feeble - and still I think I could hold out to go the journey but our situation will not admit of it - Zeal(?) is still living and well and if and if I was to drop off I want you to come and get him immediately; life is uncertain I may out live him or not he is for you if he out lives me - my husband is willing that you should have all the property which I had when we were married and it is also for you when I am done with it - I have nothing very particular more to write to you at this time and We remain your affectionate mother and Stepfather til death

History of Methodism in Illinois From 1793 to 1832 - Rev. James Leartton D. D. - Walden and Stone - Cincinnati, 1883

Pg. 240 - Joseph Foulks . . . was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey August 30, 1786. His parents were from Wales and were members of the Moravian Church. His mother, however became a Methodist, and two of her sons afterwards became Methodist preachers. . . . In 1825, . . . he was readmitted to the Illinois Conference and appointed to Shoal Creek Circuit. Whilst on this charge, he killed a man in self-defense. He had said something in a sermon that displeased the man, a drunken half Indian, half negro, who swore that he would take the preacher’s life. The fears of the family with whom he was staying being arroused by seeing the man whet his knife, they urged Mr. Foulks to be on his guard. Acordingly, upon retiring, he took with him a gun and remained awake to watch. In the night, the Indian crept stealthily up the stairway with his knife and a gun in his hand, and just as he appeared above, Mr. Foulks fired; the ball struck the man in the breast, killing him instantly. At the ensuing conference his conduct was “fully approved.” . . .

John Wesley Hamner

He spent his boyhood at the family home in Nelson County. The family, as a result of the Civil War, was in poor circumstances financially and the children of his generation were more or less "on their own." He was educated in the public schools of the county. After his marriage, he moved to Charlottesville and for a time ran a grocery business. However, this venture failed and he was employed by the Southern Railway, later becoming a conductor. On the night of May 15, 1912, he was accidentally killed as his train was passing Union Station in Charlottesville. The writer was only nine years old at the time, but retains a vivid memory of a very kind and genial man, who loved his home and family. Nothing seemed to please him more than to have his own or the neighbors' children around him. He was a great teaser, but his "victim" of the moment was certain to be the gainer to the extent of candy or some pleasing gift. He "worked diligently" at giving pleasure to his family and friends and his unselfishness and many acts of generosity were frequently mentioned long after his death by people who had known him.

On July 5, 1892, at Pelham, North Carolina, he married Nannie Elizabeth Simmons of Danville, Virginia, and ahd the following children: Ruth Shepherd, 1893; George Thomas 1895;William Murray, 1903; and Lillian Maurice, 1910.

Tragic Death of J. W. Hamner at Union Station

Captain John W. Hamner, one of the best known and most popular railroad men in Charlottesville, met a tragic death last night at Union Station. While on duty as a fireman of the first section of southbound through freight No. 73, from Potomac Yards to Monroe, he was either knocked down by the overhead Main Street Bridge or slipped and fell from the top of a box car.

The accident occurred about 10 o'clock as the freight was passing the depot. About five minutes before pulling into the Station Conductor J. H. Baker, of Alexandria, who was in charge of the freeight, saw Mr. Hamner crossing over the train. The supposition is that the unfortunate man was making his way to the front in order to alight at the depot to secure a lunch basket, which had been left in the baggage room.

Mr. A. J. Snow of the this city, a flagman on Southern trains Nos. 29 and 38, was seated on a trunk in the baggage room as the train pulled into the depot. He heard a voice crying "O! Lord" and rushing out into the pouring rain saw a man lying face downward on the track, with one leg extending under a car. He pulled the body from under the wheels and carried it in his arms to the baggage room. Not until he had reached the room did he recognize by the light of a lantern that the victim was Mr. Hamner, with whom he had worked in former years. Mr. Hamner lingered only about fifteen or twenty minutes and passed away with his head reclining in Mr. Snow's lap. He never uttered a word after being pulled out from under the car wheels, and probably never knew what hurt him.

An examination of the body showed that the left arm and left leg were crushed. There was quite a bruise across the left temple. On the ground close by where the body fell was found Mr. Hamner's lantern.

The remains were placed on a stretcher and later removed to the undertaking establishment of James Perley & sons. Shortly befor noon today the body was removed to his late home on Anderson Street, from where the funeral will take place at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Gilby C. Kelly, D. D. pastor of the first Methodist Church, of which the deceased was a member. The Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

The following gentlemen will act as pall-bearers: Messrs. W. T. Martin, F. B. Peyton, J. Payne Caroll, Robert S. J. Sterling, W. D. Boatwright and J. D. Via.

Mr. Hamner was a native of Faber, Nelson County, and was fifty-one years of age. He had been in the employ of the Southern Railway, in one capacity or other, for a period extending over thirty years. For several years he held the position of conductor.

Mr. Hamner married Miss Nannie Simmons of Danville, his bride being but sixteen years of age at the time of the union. She survives with three children - Mrs Riuth Harnsberger, wife of Mr. W. T. Harnsberger, of Elba, Va., and Masters George and Murray Hamner of this city. Mr. Hamner also leaves two brothers - Dr. G. P. Hamner of Lynchburg and Mr. Murray Hamner of Alabama - and on sister, Miss Nettie L. Hamner, of Faber, Nelson County.

Highlights of Jackson Family History

. . . Reverand Hartwell Jackson Jr., grandson of Revolutionary War soldier Drury Jackson, married his cousin, Sarah Jackson, in 1828, and came from Clarke County to Jug Tavern, the name by which Winder was known at that time. They reared 15 children who played an important part in building this community. Hartwell's interest in real estate is evidenced in some of the earliest tax records in this area of Georgia. An interesting example is recorded in Jackson County around 1850, of an investment here - 750 acres for $1,022.50.

Their home featured a well in one of the back rooms, and twin stairways built on opposite sides of the house led to completely divided male and female bedrooms on the second floor. Hospitality rooms (called tramp rooms) built on each side of the house made it possible for the Jacksons to maintain their reputation of never refusing a traveler a night's lodging. This historic house is now owned by the J. B. Lay family, on Lay's Drive.

In 1865, when Sherman's Army marched through Georgia, a regiment camped on Hartwell Jackson's Plantation in the vicinity of Russeltown. Though the Yankee camp was within one mile of the home, it was thought the dense forest between the camp and the Jackson home saved this place from destruction. In preparartion for the Yankee invasion, the family had buried some treasures and had removed outside baseboards from the home and sealed other possessions there. Cattle were hidden in the nearby fields and forests.

In 1874, Hartwell Jackson became Jackson County's first Chairman of Comissioners To serve in this capacity, he made the 23-mile trip every day, on horseback, to the county seat in Jefferson, Georgia.

Hartwell, like his forebears, served in the Baptist ministry, being ordained November 21, 1849. His last charge in 1873 terminated a 13-year pastorate at Ebernezer Baptist Church in Gwinett County, Georgia. His picture currently hangs in the Fuirst Baptist Church in Winder, among a group of Southern Baptist ministers who served there before 1878.

In 1875, the Jacksons gave enough land and a woooden buiding to the black community for its first church, the White Oak Baptist Church, which continues to serve.

Hartwell was active in national affairs. He attended the inauguration of President Andrew Jackson, and the vest he wore to this event was woven and handmade by his wife. It is is the state of Georgia Archives in Atlanta, Georgia.

The year was 1855 when Aunt Sarepta, a slave and midwife on the Jackson Plantation, delivered the fifteenth and last child to be born to the Hartwell Jacksons. Doctors having to travel by buggy or horseback made their services at times unavailable. However, the black woman's skill was unsurpassed, apparently, by any doctor. It is not known how many of the 15 children she delivered, but so expert was Sarah Jackson at timing the birth of her children, and so skillful was Aunt Sarepta with her deliveries, there was no need for a doctor to be called.

Biographical Sketches of Prominent Baptists

Hartwell Jackson

Rev. Hartwell Jackson was born July 5, 1777. His ancestors emigrated from England to Virginia, and, being true Whigs, suffered much in the colonial struggle for independence. While he was quite young his father, Drewry Jackson died; and during the the greater part of his minority he suffered many hardships, laboring to support his widowed mother and orphaned brothers and sisters. In the midst of these toils, and before he had reached man's estate, the family removed to Georgia.

About the year 1801 he joined Fishing Creek church, Wilkes County, and felt himself called to preach the Gospel. But the deficiency of his education and the cares of his family led him to disobey the call, and he came even to doubt it. Years of chastening from the Lord, as he believed, followed, until at last he took up the cross. After exercising his gifts as a lienciate for some time, at the request of Freeman's Creek church in Clarke (now Oconee) County, he was ordained at Mars Hill in that county, June 7th, 1833. He served the former church for a considerable time as pastoor, but in consequence of his advanced age and declining health, he was unable to engage in pastoral labor to any great extent. He discharged ministerial duties, however, as his health justified and as ocassion offered. Though not eloquent he was a fervent, zelous speaker; and, being a man of excellent common sense, and a constant student of the Bible, his points were generally well taken and enforced with earnestness and effect.

He was married, January 13, 1801, to Miss Elizabeth Bostwick, and October 29th, 1818 to Miss Margaret Bradford, both of Wilkes County.
