Description.
    General Description:
Nests scattered along three tall, separated trees between the Clinch River and the fish hatchery.

    General Habitat: Riparian/Rivers, Stream. The riparian zone is only 40 feet wide at most. Then there is the open area (no trees) of the fish hatchery.

The Clinch River can be seen through the vegetation to the right of the big leaning tree in the right middle. The mowed area to the left is the fish hatchery grounds. You can just make out a nest in the top of a tree further away. These are 2 of the 3 nest trees here.


History.
    Clinton--Eagle Bend Fish Hatchery is a breeding colony of Great Blue Herons. Between 2000-2005, about a dozen nests were present (Dean Edwards). 2002. February 1, Great Blue Heron (8 adults) in and around their nest from 2001 (Jimi Moore). 2006. March 2, Great Blue Heron (10 active nests) (Ron Hoff and Dollyann Myers). March 14, Great Blue Heron (13 active nests), about 20 adults in immediate area, some on nests and others flying around or looking for food in the ponds (Ron Hoff and Dollyann Myers). March 23, Great Blue Heron (16 nests) adult birds on 14 of the nests (Ron Hoff and Dollyann Myers). April 28, Great Blue Heron (11 birds including nestlings) (Allan Trently). 2007. February 14, Great Blue Heron (9 adults) on nests, at least 9 nests, did not do accurate count as ran out of time and did not drive closer to the area (Nell Moore). March 22, Great Blue Heron (13 nests with adults sitting on them) and Double-crested Cormorant (4) not associated with heronry (Allan Trently). April 16, Double-crested Cormorant (5) not associated with heronry (Alan Trently). April 26, Great Blue Heron (14 active nests) (Ron Hoff and Dollann Myers). May 7, Not nesting--Little Blue Heron (1 adult) (Jim and Betty Reid Campbell). May 15, Great Blue Heron (17 adults) with many young birds in nests (Allan Trently). May 22, Not nesting--Little Blue Heron (1 first spring) fishing and Cattle Egret (1 breeding plumage) nearby (Carole Gobert). July 12, Not nesting--Great Egret (2), Green Heron (6), and Black-crowned Night-Heron (1) (Allan Trently). 2008. March 20, Great Blue Heron (11 nests, 7 of them active) 8 adults present (Ron Hoff and Dollyann Myers). Contacts are K.
