Directions from town to colony: From south loop around Smyrna, take Highway 266 (Jefferson Pike) approximately two miles to Jefferson Spring Recreation Area. From there by boat, cross under Highway 266 bridge upstream approximately 1/2 mile to the heronry on the right.

Description.
    General Description:
Site is bottomland river bend, connected to land in low water, and possibly isolated at normal summer lake level.

    General Habitat: Bottomland Hardwood, Freshwater Island, Peninsula
    Specific Habitat: Deciduous Trees
    Species of nest trees: Sycamore

    Size: 0.5 hectares

History.
    Percy Priest Lake--Jefferson Spring Recreation Area is a breeding colony of Great Blue Herons. From the water, go under the bridge for 266 and continue approximately 0.5 mile. The heronry is in a large Sycamore on a spit on the south side of the waterway (may be an island when water high). DeLorme: Page 38, A-1, far top left corner almost directly east of 266 label and west of the J. Percy Priest label, on the east edge of the thumb that sticks out into the water and is periodically inundated (blue dashes). 2006. April 2, Great Blue Heron (21 nests) some adults sitting on nests, others building; all nests in one large Sycamore. This is the initial discovery of this heronry (Scott Somershoe).
