History.
     Knoxville--Looney Island has a breeding colony of Great Blue Herons and Black-crowned Night-Herons, next to Sequoyah Hills west of Alcoa Highway (US 129). 2007. March 11, Great Blue Heron (46 adults) in the trees at nests on Looney Island, as seen from Sequoyah Park a short distance across the river, nests not counted; and Black-crowned Night-Heron (1) also in the trees (Carole Gobert). 2008. March 12, Great Blue Heron (60 nests of which 52 active) 54 adults present, building and incubating, preliminary count and from one side view (Mark Campen).
