History.

Boone Lake. This is the first known heronry of Great Blue Herons found on Boone Lake (Wallace Coffey). 2007. May 29, Boone Lake, a breeding colony of Great Blue Herons, south of the mouth of Muddy Creek, off the tip of Wagner Bend, near TVA Point 9, between South Fork Holston River mile point 25 and 26, which is downstream of DeVault Bridge (5 nests, each having 2-3 young nearly ready to fledge). There was much wing flapping by the young birds. Most nests were on an island, but one of the nests was on the shoreline high up a ridge above the lake in a dead tree. Neighbor in the area said not first year nested. He remembers the nests in the spring of 2006 and maybe before. In addition, there was a Double-crested Cormorant perched near the Great Blue Heron nests, but no cormorant nest was found (Wallace Coffey). Contact is Wallace Coffey, jwcoffey@tricon.net.
