History.
Kingsport--This
site was first used in 2005. Netherland Inn Road, Sullivan County side,
just before crossing into Hawkin's County on island just southwest of the old
Netherland Inn, at the bridge across the South Fork Holston River driving from
Kingsport towards West Stone Drive, of breeding colony of Great Blue Heron and
Double-crested Cormorant (first time in 2006, nest failed).
2005. May 2,
Great Blue Heron (2 new nests on island, not present during winter) outcome
unknown, winter weather 2005-2006 largely destroyed the nests (Rick Knight).
2006.
March 3,
Great Blue Heron, six adults, three of them standing on stick nests, one smaller
nest could still be under construction. Nests not seen last week as transversed
area several times (Rick Phillips).
March 6,
Great Blue Herons observed mating in partially constructed nest on left, nest on
far right complete with bird sitting, herons removing "green" wood from
shoreline trees for construction by ripping branches from the trees, herons
accompanied by 3 Black Vultures and 2 Double-crested Cormorants (Don Carrier).
March 30,
Great Blue Heron (6 occupied nests); Double-crested Cormorant, one sitting on
nest, cormorant nest is first known from the 5-county area of Northeast
Tennessee. [Double-crested Cormorants have been nesting on the Holston Army
Ammunition Plant just downriver in adjacent Hawkins County since 1992 (in 2005
nesting disrupted by nearby Bald Eagle nest) and the Netherland Inn Road site is
undoubtedly an expansion from the ammunition plant heronry] (Rick Knight).
2007. February 10,
Great Blue Heron (2) on river, downstream from Netherland Inn Drive at
Riverfront Restaurant and "on the island downstream from Netherland Inn Bridge,
where the Great blue Herons nested last year, there were two or three Great Blue
Herons standing on and around the nests."(Rob Biller and Don Holt). Contacts are
