Directions from town to colony:
The site is at Patrick Henry Lake, just below the dam, and is easily visible from Ft. Henry Road in Kingsport. Traveling from Johnson City toward Kingsport, just after crossing the double bridges near the dam, there is a road on left named Wesley Road (Street?). It leads down to an access road that winds down under the double bridges. The heronry is in the trees across the river from the access road along the top of the ridge.

Description.
    General Description:
The nests are located in three Sycamores along the southern bank of the Holston River between Fort Patrick Henry dam and Highway 36.

    Specific Habitat: Deciduous Trees
    Species of nest trees: Sycamore (all nests)
    Size: About 1 hectare

History.
   
2006. March 4, Great Blue Heron (14 occupied nests) 19 adults. No nests on upstream side of heronry due to nesting Great Horned Owl (young and one brooding adult present). March 14, Great Blue Heron (12 occupied nests) (Michelle King). 2007. February 28, Great Blue Heron (22 birds on 25 nests) on Fort Henry Drive just below the dam. Several nests had two birds standing on them. They were in breeding plumage, displaying, and rearranging sticks in the nests. Usually pass this site at least once a day and this is the first day noticed birds standing on the nests (Judy Roach and Mary Jane Erwin). Comments: March 31 - Did not count nests this trip. April 9 - This was the first date that young were observed. No other detailed counting was made of nest/adults at this date/time. April 26 - Only two nests showed signs of hatched young. May 1 - Four nests were still being incubated. May 9 - Three nests were still being incubated. May 18 - One nest appeared to be empty. One new nest in one tree with an adult sitting on eggs. One nest falling from tree with two young near. One new nest being built.
