Colony located on an island. Stood on the river bank across the channel from the colony. Google Earth for location.

Nearest City/Town: Knoxville
Distance: Approximately 15 miles
Directions from town to colony: I-40 E from Knoxville to Asheville Highway exit, cross river, go right on John Sevier Highway, cross river again and turn left on French Road, then left on Kimberlin Heights Road, then right on Seven Islands Road. In approximately half-mile turn left on dirt road that ends at a boat ramp.

Description.
    General Description:
The refuge is primarily grasses with some woodland. The heronry is located on Newmans Island, which is primarily wooded.

    Size: 0.5 hectares (1.25 acres)

History.
   
 Knoxville--Seven Islands Wildlife Refuge, of breeding colony of Great Blue Heron, on the upstream side near the Bald Cypress trees of the large island in the French Broad River. 2004. April 10, Great Blue Heron (3 nests) (David Trently). 2006. March 15, Great Blue Heron (6 adults on nests about two hundred yards south of the eagle nest, as well as two empty Great Blue Heron type nests another hundred or so yards farther south (Dan and Laurie Mooney). 2007. April 1, Great Blue Heron (15 nests) on the island and some still building (Jim Giocomo).
