| Comments: April 27 - Most birds were incubating while about 15% of the Great Blue Herons were still building. Probably 75% of the Great Egrets were incubating, the rest building. Paddled through the heronry and tried to count nests using transects without disturbing the birds too much. Nest count is probably pretty good, whereas number of adults is a real estimate since they were flying in and out all the time and it was really hard to tally that. There was a Great Horned Owl nest in the middle of the heronry. One young owl looked content at staring down on the Great Blues. May 24 - Tough to see anything because the vegetation had greened out. Saw a few egg shells floating and a few dead Great Egrets in the water. Did not count nearly as many Great Blue Heron nests, but more Great Egret nests. Water only 8" deep in the heronry. The Anhinga was seen again, but could not find the nest. |
